Two days in Johannesburg

There is only one flight a week to St Helena. It’s on Saturday. And it flies from Johannesburg. Which is why I found myself heading there to meet Emma at the home of her sister Leslie and brother-in-law Martin for a two night layover before Emma and I then headed off for the Saturday flight.

But first I had to get there and the Gods of air travel were not favouring me. My first twenty four hours were defined by cancelled flights, frustrating customer service, routes via Cape Town with barely caught connections and hardly any sleep. But this has been tempered by two days of great company, outdoor dining and wonderful home cooked food. Add wide ranging conversation, laughter and drunken guitar singalongs and my revival was complete. I saw none of the city but feel I have not missed out; a rushed day trying to catch any sights would have spoilt the relaxation that has transformed my frustrating journey to South Africa into a distant memory. Next stop St Helena.
